Wauchope Square masterplan

Ian White Associates Limited

Craigmillar is an area to the south east of Edinburgh. PARC Craigmillar is a joint venture company spearheading the regeneration of Craigmillar, involving a total investment of around &pound200 million over 15 years, with 2000 new homes, schools, town centre and high quality public realm.Wauchope Square was the first development of the regeneration, and the landscape had to achieve cohesion between the various individually designed buildings, and foster a sense of community, which would be welcoming, attractive and encourage neighbourly activity. The new joint campus school is an important focal point and the shared surface streets provide safe, clear routes to school. Much of the Shared Space area is constructed with permeable paving, which integrates drainage functions within the on-street parking bays and carriageway build-up. The scheme is punctuated by a series of attractive public spaces, in the form of a new civic school square, community garden, and various small play areas, all of which support everyday sociability and connection to each other.Featured as a case study in Designing Streets Scottish Government Policy Statement: “The work at Craigmillar illustrates how many of the functions of streets can be integrated in both innovative designs and collaborative processes that result in streets with a distinctive and positive character and excellent functionality”.
