Tetley Round Garden, Leeds University

Smeeden Foreman Ltd

The project involved revisiting part of an area originally laid out in the late 1980’s. The area though popular and well used had become overgrown and was difficult to access by all students due to several steps and awkward changes of level. The area is located on a busy route between several areas of the campus. The area already worked as a node, as a stopping off point for students to sit and read and eat lunch etc. The redesign principally addressed areas that were not working as well as they might and improve access for all. The planting had become overgrown and fragmented. It has been replaced with strong elements that enhance the structure of the space such as the espaliered trees and strong sweeps of shrubs.Power points were introduced into the area and the walls repainted to provide an outdoor exhibition space for temporary artwork exhibitions. All areas of the University campus are very heavily trafficked and need to be very robust to stand up to the heavy levels of use. The seating provision was extended significantly to accommodate more people in this already popular area.Steps were taken out and replaced with level access to all parts of the garden. Resin bound gravel was used as a unifying material across the space with new feature block paving and existing recycled/reused materials.
