Potters Fields Park

GROSS. MAX.

This park alongside the Foster and Partners-designed Greater London Authority on the south bank of the Thames had to reconcile the needs of many different users in a small and intensively used space. The intimate neighbourhood park facing the residential areas gradually opens up towards the river with a series of stepped terraces. It incorporates the unique perennial planting style of Piet Oudolf. Gross.Max introduced the idea of setting up a park trust which made it possible to appoint a head gardener as the financial gain from using the park for a wide variety of (commercial) events directly funds the maintenance and management of the park. This scheme demonstrates how the transition can be made seamlessly between the neighbourhood high street and a metropolitan river front.
