Lyric Theatre

Groundwork London

The first floor of the Lyric Hammersmith was previously a cold disused paved terrace that served primarily as a smoking area. The space is now an inviting, green, innovative roof garden. It features sustainable timber decking, seating, low planters, lighting and a bespoke six-metre high pergola structure, visible from the nearby Underground station. The contemporary design supports and strengthens the theatre’s artistic vision, and complements the Lyric’s modern, eclectic performance programme. The garden is a step in the right direction to addressing the effects of high density development in the city.

Planting

750 shrubs and three mature eucalyptus trees were planted. The garden absorbs up to 75% of rainfall, thus reducing the runoff dramatically. Water captured under the decking is fed into the nearby planting containers.

The combination of indigenous flora provides important habitats for native bird and insect populations. Cities where concrete and tarmac predominate retain heat and create “urban heat islands”, as much as 5⁰C warmer than surrounding suburbs. The selected planting, through transpiration, directly cools the air, and reduces the surface roof temperature. The large leaved planting produces oxygen, and removes carbon dioxide from the air. They also trap up to 85% of airborne particulates on their leaf surfaces.

Materials

The roof garden will enable the building below to lose approximately 30% less heat in the winter, and make it cooler in the summer. The garden will extend the life of the existing roof fabric by up to 70%.

An eco-friendly waterproof membrane was laid before the decking was constructed, to protect the surface. Bespoke carpenters were appointed to ensure the landscape architects’ vision for the six-metre canopy were not compromised. Further specialist furniture makers were nominated to create the seating, again all designed by the landscape architects.
