Lon Gwyrfai, Multi Use Path

Harrison Design Development Ltd
Purpose of the Project

The purpose of the project was to create a brand new 6.5km long multi-use path for walkers, cyclists and horse riders between Beddgelert and Rhydd Ddu. When the Welsh Highland railway line re-opened in 2009 between Beddgelert and Rhyd Ddu, it became evident that there was a need to provide an alternative route for walkers, cyclists and horse riders in order to avoid them having to use the narrow winding A4085. After deciding on the route of the new path, securing adequate funding to finance the scheme, consulting with all landowners and prospective users, the SNPA tendered for a consultant to develop detailed designs for the scheme and to manage all stages of the implementation process. Harrison Design Development were appointed to undertake these works.

The Site

The site is set entirely within the stunningly attractive landscape of Snowdonia National Park. The route crosses the Lyn y Gadder-SSSI, and the Afon Gwyrfai SAC. The route uses a combination of new and existing tracks, including an historic mineral causeway. The site is a 6.5km long linear route, Harrison Design Development have provided designs for the entire route, which is over 5 hectares, however, the part of the scheme under the main construction contract is 2.99 hectares in size.

Key elements of the physical works included:

•a 6.5km long 2m wide path suitable for use for walkers, cyclists and horses,•steps and paths linking into other strategically important routes in the area,•3 No new bridges,•crossing of an ancient causeway,•associated culvert and drainage works,•associated fencing and furniture,•new highway signage to meet Road Safety Audit requirements.
