Edward Alleyn Performing Arts Building

BBUK Studio Limited

In July 2004 BBUK were appointed to carry out a Strategic Landscape Masterplan at Alleyn’s School to form part of the planning application for a Performing Arts Building designed by vHH Architects. The Masterplan addressed the current landscape situation, identifying areas that required improvement either aesthetically or environmentally and ensured the landscape is able to respond to changes in use to the existing building stock, built piecemeal over the past 100 years, as well as to new buildings constructed on the site.Following this BBUK were appointed to design the landscape associate with the new building. Two new quads form a new external heart for the school, consolidating the new building with the existing building stock. The quads contain both formal and informal sports facilities, bespoke seating formed from granite blocks set out both to provide intimate conversation corners and for spectators watching netball or more informal games. New groves of flowering trees have been planted to provide colour, shade and scent. A path network gives clear circulation between the buildings and sports spaces in the grounds. A generous hardwood deck surrounds the new building with seating looking out over the schools principal football and cricket pitches to the north of the school buildings.
