Bold swathes of planting, seating areas, and an iconic water feature in the scheme that provides a new outstanding town centre environment for the town which has helped retailers weather the economic downturn. The central space has a marked change in level which the scheme reflects through a simple elegant line of steps. Through careful detailing the project builds on the character and history of Darlington whilst providing a new chapter for the town, and a streetscape that caters for modern day living in a changing society. The design team worked closely with stakeholders in the town, particularly the Disability Group and amenity Societies but also carried out a general consultation exercise to gauge support for proposals at key stages. Gillespies also organised the appointment of the Artist Micheal Pinskey to collaborate on the project which resulted in the Darlington bar code being incorporated into the planters and water feature and the set piece called ‘Life Pulse’ being created.
