SLR Consulting set out to create a contemporary landscape that would respond to the unusual curvaceous form of two new school buildings, present an impressive gateway for both campuses and collect the key pedestrian and cycle routes. The challenge was to develop a theme that could unite the diverse interests of the two school buildings: one of law and one of design. SLR’s solution was to model the space on the human brain, with left brain analytical thinking (law and business) and right brain creativity (design) represented in the layout of the space separating the two schools. The design consequently includes both linear and fluid forms. A sinuous route reflecting the form of the new schools winds out of Campus East, up to the Intersite Bridge. The Bridge landscape seamlessly integrates the two campuses, with the words ‘Northumbria University’ picked out in contrasting colours of resin-bound gravel. The completed scheme is an elegant solution and characterised by strong architectural styles. The public realm accommodates a large transient population, providing space for an outdoor café and many events.
