Angell Town

Coe Design Landscape Architecture

The delivery of the Little Angels Garden Square and play area represents the final stage of the successful regeneration of Angell Town Estate in Brixton, London. Surrounded by housing on all sides this new pocket park is strategically placed to act as a focal point and meeting place for the estate’s community. The project involved the demolition of public housing built in the late 1970’s and its replacement with smaller-scale family units, designed by architects Burrell Foley Fischer. A landscape masterplan by Coe Design provides safer, inclusive public and private green spaces, alongside greatly improved pedestrian and vehicular access.Coe Design was part of a project team that was actively engaged throughout the design phases with the neighbourhood action committee to ensure the resident’s requirements were met. Coe Design were involved in extensive public consultation and community participation through meetings, leafleting, ‘at home’ interviews, questionnaires, public open days and exhibitions of proposals as they developed.Masterplanning included the provision of home zones to manage traffic and parking. In addition to the landscape associated with the housing, Coe designed a new park on the estate and were commissioned to carry out an estate wide Traffic and Signage Strategy. The practice also enhanced the existing public realm spaces on the estate through the provision of seating, hard surfaces, play equipment, mounded grassed areas and boundary planting.’Secure by design’ principals were used to assist in augmenting the strategy for a safer external environment. The gardens are well overlooked, which together with the sense of community ownership brought about through the consultation process, has resulted in reduced levels of vandalism and anti-social behaviour that had previously blighted the area.

Planting

The perimeter is planted with Prunus avium and a flowering hedge to provide a bufferzone between the perimeter road and the park. Fragrant herbs and flowering plants line the edge of play areas, paths and lawn, with refuse storage areas obscured with a screen of climbing plants.

Materials

The Little Angels Garden Square has mounded topography at its centre creating a functional plateau beneath the existing pollarded London Plane trees. Paths utilise a premium quality porous paving system (maximising attenuation of storm water on site) with a margin of recycled resin bound clear glass. Robust FSC certified hardwood timber benches are located adjacent to play areas which are surfaced with wet pour play surfacing.
