A Record of Lancaster

BCA Landscape

The Design Guide brings the team’s research and design vision together into something tangible and understandable for the City Council and other potential designers/developers in the city on future ‘Square Route’ projects. The Market Square Plinth and wayfinding were then developed, implemented and integrated back in to the Guide as successful demonstrator case studies. Additional interpretations and mediums were also explored, including banners for the museum frontage, postcards and posters as additional mediums for sharing ‘A Record of Lancaster’.

Brief

A Record of Lancaster was born to assist delivery of the Lancaster Square Routes programme which aims to revitalise the historic city of Lancaster and strengthen its position as a major destination both for visitors and residents of the district. The Square Routes aim is to create high quality public spaces in which people want to linger, increasing dwell time to encourage commercial, social and cultural gains. The Design Guide was produced focusing on a new Public Plinth for Market Square and wider wayfinding for the City, which were then implemented as well by the team. These then were incorporated in to the Design Guide as case studies to evidence the design approach for potential future Square Routes design work. BCA Landscape were involved in a truly and fully collaborative way as joint designers with Smiling Wolf on all aspects of research, vision development and detail design for all the Record of Lancaster stories, the Design Guide itself and its subsequent implementation as part of the Market Square plinth. BCAL also worked collaboratively with Smiling Wolf and Placemarque on reinterpreting the guide and vision for way-finding.
