Code of Conduct 2026

The Landscape Institute is at its best when members, volunteers, trustees and staff work together with professionalism, respect and a shared commitment to advancing both our profession and our Institute.

Over recent years, the Institute has undertaken a significant programme of governance improvements designed to strengthen how we work together, increase member engagement and ensure that everyone who contributes to the LI is treated with fairness, dignity and respect.

As part of this work, Board and Council are proposing the introduction of a new Code of Conduct that will apply equally to members, volunteers, trustees and staff.

Purpose of the Code of Conduct

The purpose of the Code is straightforward. It sets out the standards of behaviour we should all be able to expect from one another whenever we are acting in connection with the Landscape Institute. It reflects our shared values of respect, inclusivity, trust and collaboration, helping to create an environment where people feel confident to contribute, challenge ideas constructively and work together positively.

How our key documents work together

The proposed Code of Conduct does not replace the Landscape Institute’s Code of Practice. Instead, the Code of Practice, Code of Conduct and Behaviour & Employment Policies provide complementary frameworks that support a professional, respectful and inclusive community.

The existing Code of Practice is an important framework that will continue to govern professional conduct, ethics and standards in professional practice. It sets out the standards of professional conduct expected of members of the Landscape Institute in relation to their professional practice and ensures the reputation and trust in our profession is maintained through continuing high standards of professional practice. It is aligned to the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) Global Ethical Principles that aim to ensure and promote global ethical practice, public confidence in the landscape profession, and environmental wellbeing.

There are no plans to replace this. The new Code of Conduct will sit alongside it, focusing instead on how we behave towards one another as members of the Landscape Institute community.

Together, these documents provide a clear framework:

  • Code of Conduct – how we work together respectfully.
  • Code of Practice – how members practise professionally.
  • Behaviour & Employment Policies – how concerns are managed.

Supporting constructive debate

The proposed Code of Conduct is intended to support – not restrict – constructive debate. The Landscape Institute values open discussion, differing opinions and professional challenge. Healthy debate is essential to a thriving professional body. The Code simply establishes the standards of behaviour that allow those conversations to take place respectfully.

Request for feedback

We recognise that introducing a new Code of Conduct is an important step and we want members to help shape the final version before it is adopted.

We therefore invite members to review the proposed Code of Conduct, the accompanying Frequently Asked Questions alongside the new Working Together Framework and Members Behaviour Policy.

Please feedback views by completing this survey.

Your feedback will help Board and Council ensure that the final Code reflects both the Institute’s values and the views of its members.
